Congratulations to Ms Waegner!
Following some months of gruelling training rides Ms Waegner finally rode her most challenging ride to date. The Dragon Ride – an etape of the Tour de France – was 139 miles with 11,000 feet of ascents. Wales was beautiful, although after the first 40 miles the weather turned for the worse so there was less looking at the countryside and more efforts put into keeping upright on her bike! Howling winds and lashing rain for 99 miles added to the challenges of the day.
Battling up the devil's elbow climb Ms Waegner came third in her age group and feed stops were short to stop the cold setting in. Climbs were needed to warm up again and there were plenty of those! In her own words 'A huge sense of achievement and relief that I completed the course after 9 1/2 hours in the saddle. How the pros do this day after day, I really don't know! Just the Chiltern 100 on 16th July and the Birmingham Velo 100 on 24th September to go to complete this year's challenges.'
