Ethos

Art is something that brightens up our rooms and triggers off our imaginations but also helps us to look at our world in different ways.

Davenies is lucky to have a large and well-equipped Art Studio, with facilities for printing, pottery and other three dimensional work, amongst other things.

Many pupils get most enjoyment from the simple physical activity of making marks and getting their hands dirty. They learn by exploring different techniques for using and controlling materials and by ‘looking’. Drawing is far more about what we do with our eyes than what we do with our hands. To this end, we often begin a project by trying to look through the eyes of some of the great artists. Lessons also involve planning and thought. Producing art means entering into a chain of decisions; experimenting, rejecting, building, reworking and finally deciding when to stop!

At Davenies, we endeavour to learn this universal language of shape, colour and texture in order to appreciate and respond creatively to the world we see around us.
