“La mathematica è l’alfabeto nel quale Dio ha scritto l’universo.”

Galileo Galilei

What better premise for the Maths Department to begin with: To have every child understanding how Maths works in “Real Life”.  Mathematics always surrounds us whether we are aware of it or not.

Aims of the Mathematics Department

  1. To give each pupil rich opportunities to develop their mathematical skills, using concrete materials.
  2. To develop a positive attitude to mathematics.
  3. To teach mathematics with understanding.
  4. To promote, encourage and foster an interest in, enthusiasm for and enjoyment of mathematics.
  5. To encourage a pupil to maintain and develop an enquiring attitude towards his environment through exploration and discovery (because mathematics is a way of organising our experience of the world, particularly through patterns and structures).
  6. To develop competence and confidence in mathematical knowledge, skills, concepts and their application across the curriculum and in real life.
  7. To develop the ability to recognise a problem, to extract the mathematics and operate appropriately having organised the pupil’s time, materials and approach.
  8. To develop an increasing ability to communicate the pupil’s mathematics to others in a variety of ways (verbal, written, graphic, pictorial, etc…).
  9. To develop an understanding of the language of mathematics and to be able to use the same.
