What better premise for the Maths Department to begin with: To have every child understanding how Maths works in “Real Life”. Mathematics always surrounds us whether we are aware of it or not.
Aims of the Mathematics Department
- To give each pupil rich opportunities to develop their mathematical skills, using concrete materials.
- To develop a positive attitude to mathematics.
- To teach mathematics with understanding.
- To promote, encourage and foster an interest in, enthusiasm for and enjoyment of mathematics.
- To encourage a pupil to maintain and develop an enquiring attitude towards his environment through exploration and discovery (because mathematics is a way of organising our experience of the world, particularly through patterns and structures).
- To develop competence and confidence in mathematical knowledge, skills, concepts and their application across the curriculum and in real life.
- To develop the ability to recognise a problem, to extract the mathematics and operate appropriately having organised the pupil’s time, materials and approach.
- To develop an increasing ability to communicate the pupil’s mathematics to others in a variety of ways (verbal, written, graphic, pictorial, etc…).
- To develop an understanding of the language of mathematics and to be able to use the same.
