Mr J.C. Lucas, Davenies Headmaster 1968-1992
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of former Headmaster of Davenies, Mr J.C. Lucas (M.A. Dip. Ed. Oxon), earlier this month.
John Lucas was the School’s second headmaster, appointed in September 1968 following the retirement of founding headmaster Reverend Newton, and ran the School with the help of his wife, Molly, for 24 years. Mr Lucas kept a charming log of his headship recording academic successes, noteworthy events, staff changes and even a note of fees and maintenance costs. During his 24-year tenure Mr Lucas, who lived in the upstairs floor of the Farmhouse, increased the School roll from 141 boys to 171, oversaw an entire changeover of the staff roll (with the exception of Mrs Pink ,the Cleaner), and enabled the development of the School site to accommodate new Junior School classrooms, a pavilion, the School’s first Computer Room, and a more modern (but still outdoor) Swimming Pool. Mr Lucas carried the School’s motto singulus pro fraternitate laborans through to a whole new generation of pupils.
The thoughts of the whole school community are with Molly and the family at this sad time.
