Science Discovery Day at Haileybury
Four boys from Year 6 took part in the Science Discovery Day at Haileybury.
The scene was set: a murder had taken place the night before and it was down to the pupils to solve the mystery of who, where and why. Provided with evidence gathered by SOCO and the police, Maximilian, Hugo , Mattie and Oliver set about analysing all the available data, using sophisticated forensic techniques: they ascertained which of the suspects had been present at the crime scene by testing the pH of soil samples; used flame tests to determine the chemical composition of powder samples, found on the suspects clothes; used methods of ink comparison to determine the source of a threatening letter sent to the victim; and identified fingerprints and analysed blood samples before bringing all their findings together to put forward their case.
A fantastic time was had by all involved – it was an amazing day and a great learning experience for the boys, who came away full of excitement and proudly wearing samples of their own DNA!
