Success at Prep Schools’ Lions Trials
Several Middle School boys attended football trials for the most talented independent school footballers across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey, and achieved selection success.
The England Prep Schools’ Lions U12 trials, hosted at Merrist Wood College, provide a high standard of play alongside boys from different schools and is a fantastic opportunity for budding footballers to gain valuable experience.
Players who are selected represent England at The Gothia Cup, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world, with over 80 nations taking part! Several Davenies boys have been selected for the England teams including Hadley Sargent, Year 5, who has been selected to represent the U12 A Squad, wearing the number three shirt. Selection is based on an aspect of the player’s game that is exceptional or unusual; whether that be a fantastic bit of skill, great tackle or a pass, among other things. Players selected for the A Squad play against professional Academies and other District teams. Players who show a high level of ability, but are not selected for the main District A squads, are invited to join a Development Squad. Congratulations to Zac Abrahams (Year 5), Angus Bell, Charlie Broad, Ben Cornelius, Caspar Claridge, Ethan Grimes-Crompton and Oli Stapleton (all Year 6) who have all been selected for the Development Squads and will also compete at Gothia next year. The boys will take part in a training camp before they embark on the tournament, providing the opportunity for the squads to get together, as well as work with each other and their coaches before they set off.
It is great to have the talents of these boys recognised and we wish them every success on this exciting journey.
