Virtual Swimming Gala v High March
High March “host” inaugural virtual gala, as Davenies’ swimmers enjoy the opportunity to partake in some longed-for competitive sport.
‘Do we get wet in a virtual gala, Sir?’ A fair question ahead of our very first, virtual gala against High March. It did get wet, but without spectator noise and the tension during a head-to-head gala, the event did lack its usual, fever-pitched atmosphere. It was suggested we needed some piped cheering and clapping. In the end, we settled for William Whitby’s very excitable outbursts to keep us all going! Although the real thing could not be matched, everyone enjoyed being back in the water, swimming fast and working together as a team.
The format was straight forward. Each of the eight swimmers from year groups 3 to 6, swam one individual event each and three relays; medley, freestyle and squadron. Meanwhile, a mile away, High March girls were doing the same, just a little quicker as it turned out! Times were taken and High March, as hosts, kindly collated the results.
Well done to everyone who competed, but clearly we will need to up our training schedule ready for the return fixture later in the year!

There is no squad training at the moment, but those who signed up this term for early morning swimming (Wednesday lunchtime and after school for Years 4 and 3 respectively) have benefitted from the extra swim; building up their stamina, working on technique and dive starts and improving relay change overs. The message is, sign up next term!
