ACE Days

Another Successful end to the term!

The end of last term saw boys in Year 3 – Year 7 take part in a range of activities on and off site. These days are not only a fun way to end a half term, and reward the hard work from the boys, but also an opportunity to consolidate learning and put/see it in real life settings therefore reinforcing classroom learning. These experiences, that are included in the fees, are a unique part of our curriculum here at Davenies. Last term:

Year 3 went to Kew Gardens. During their visit, the boys will had the opportunity to explore the glasshouses and attractions. They enjoyed a  workshop exploring how seeds are formed and dispersed, the role of bees and how to look after plants. This 90-minute session tied in perfectly with this term’s Science topic about flowering plants. The hive contemporary art exhibit was interesting and the various plant habitats linked with their Geography topic about weather and climate.

Year 4 went to the RAF Museum where they had the opportunity to learn about the history of the RAF, the stories of lots of men and women through history, and what their contribution and technology in the future could look like. They extended their understanding of some of the key events of World War II and the experiences of pilots, engineers and the Home Front.

Year 5 had a day of workshops delivered by Oppidan. During the day, boys took part in a number of workshops and reflections replicating an adult assessment day with a keen eye on school group assessments. It was outdoor learning focused on child-to-child interaction, teamwork and communication. This was the third of five Oppidan Days on the boys’ journey through the Middle School and follows the Autumn Term’s launch day and Lent’s communication day.

Year 6 learnt and performed Treasure Island—a play in a day—directed by the Konflux Theatre Company. Throughout the day, the boys bought Treasure Island to life under the guidance of Lauren Cesena and her team from Konflux Theatre in Education. With over 25 years of experience, the company provides schools with unique programmes that enrich and extend the National Curriculum. As they put it, “We believe that young people learn best when they are learning creatively and having fun.”

Year 7 went to Bletchley Park where they had the opportunity to have a guided tour of the site, visiting the Enigma machines and many other World War II relics, along with a workshop on code-breaking.
