Points of Entry
Entry to the school is usually at Reception or Year 7, although we may occasionally have vacancies in other year groups. Admission is at the discretion of the Headmaster and subject to availability of places, which is usually restricted to two classes per year group.
If you wish to register for a place for your son, please complete the Registration Form. A non-refundable £50 registration fee is also due to secure your son’s registration.
Reception places are offered out approximately 12 months prior to joining (usually less for other years). In the event of a place not being available, the prospective pupil’s name is carried forward to the waiting list until such time as he can be accommodated, or his name is withdrawn.
On acceptance of the place, prospective pupils are required to pay a fee deposit upon receipt of which their place is confirmed as guaranteed, subject to satisfactory completion of assessment procedures set out below.
Procedures for entry into different year groups are as follows:
Reception: pupils joining Reception are not formally assessed, but the Head of Pre-Prep will visit them at their playgroups/nurseries to observe informal play and talk with their key worker. If, as a result of this visit, there are any concerns as to his suitability for the Davenies’ learning environment then the Head of Pre-Prep will discuss these further with the parents.
Years 1 and 2: prospective pupils to Years 1 and 2 will be invited to spend a morning with their current year group where they will meet the Head of Pre-Prep and be asked to do some reading, writing and Maths.
Year 3 to Year 6: prospective pupils will be invited to spend a day with their current year group. During the day they will be assessed to determine suitability to the Davenies’ learning environment and where they might be later placed in sets.
Year 7 entry and Scholarship: we are usually able to offer a limited number of places for entry into Year 7. The school expects pupils entering Year 7 to continue into Year 8 and sit Common Entrance, Scholarship or specific entrance exams set by their intended senior school. Prospective pupils will be invited to spend a day with their current year group. During the day they will be assessed to determine suitability to the Davenies’ learning environment and where they might be later placed in sets. We also hold a Scholarship Day in the Autumn Term to consider boys for academic scholarships as well as Music, Sport and Creative & Performing Arts.
In the event of over subscription for entry into Year 7, the process will be competitive and places will be awarded taking into account the following criteria:
- the School’s perception of the ability of a prospective pupil to access the School’s curriculum and its behavioural expectations;
- academic performance on day of assessment, relative to other applicants;
- supporting statements from parents and schools;
- the presence of brothers in the School;
- due notice should be given to those with younger siblings who are likely to join the School.
All Pupils: for all pupils joining the school beyond Reception, we will ask the previous school to provide a report. In addition, prospective pupils will have a short assessment by the Head of Learning Support to ascertain any potential need for additional support. The School will not discriminate against a child for entry into Davenies because of their individual needs; for further information, please see our Admissions Policy.
Please contact Mrs Alison Payne, Registrar, on 01494 685400 for further information on admissions.
