Blue Pig Café: Bringing People Together
The second Friday of this month saw the opening of the first Blue Pig Café of March 2025! Here, Sebastian recounts his experience running the much-loved event…
It was a fabulous beginning to this period and it proved to be an event buzzing with enthusiasm and community. It was an early morning for those involved, who had to wake up together with dawn stretching her rosy fingers across the sky! To all of these people, I think we owe a huge thank you! I would also like to thank, on behalf of everyone who helped that morning, the school catering company, Thomas Franks, for donating the bacon which I am sure many of you enjoyed! And last but definitely not least, current parent, Mr Ian Warby, who did an amazing job organising the event!
In the Dining Room, before the Café opened, we were busy preparing all of the sizzling rolls, mouth-watering pastries and soul-warming drinks which you all relished! In a frenzy of gloves and aprons, we managed to wrap up every pain-au-chocolat, cut every single piece of hot bacon and unfold each delicious brioche bun in time for service.
Around half of us, me included, rushed outside into the icy morning to serve these goodies to you… while some people handed out sweet apple juice or savoury bacon rolls, I was at the hot chocolate station! I filled up every cup with hot chocolate, while the whipped cream was squirted and the marshmallows sprinkled on by Nicholas N. Our customers ranged from small children in their second term of Reception to grandparents doing the school run!
Believe it or not, there was something even better that drinking some of that hot chocolate ourselves. This was the heart warming feeling of watching our customers eat and drink with joy. To know that we helped make someone’s day is a wonderful feeling. Every munch of pain-au-chocolat or bacon roll, and every sip of hot chocolate or fruit juice, filled us all with delight; around school later, I even came across someone to whom I had never talked to before say “oh, I remember you, you gave me extra cream with my hot chocolate!” – I could not help but laugh at that!
To summarise, the Blue Pig Café is so much more than a pop-up stall; it is a social event which brings people together and makes them happy. To all of the younger boys: you should help too when you get the chance. You are probably not so keen on the idea of getting out from under the duvet early, but do not worry: a blanket of radiant smiles will await you at the Blue Pig Café!
