Educational Journey

Davenies School

Finding and choosing the right school for your son is a hugely important decision for both parent and child. An educational journey and environment that offers the chance to get the most out of their preparatory school years is key to your son’s ongoing success and development.

We offer two main points of intake, one being Reception and the other being Year 7. With both admission processes working on a first-come, first-served basis, we encourage all prospective parents to contact our Registrar, Mrs Alison Payne, who can then talk to you about the engaging, inspiring and challenging education that Davenies can offer your son. Mrs Payne will also explain how the admissions procedure works and offer you the chance to book a visit to the School. Boys joining in Reception are not formally assessed, but our Head of Pre-Prep will take the time to visit your son at their preschool setting to observe informal play and to talk with his key worker.

For entry into the Senior School, we offer a limited number of places. As a school, Davenies expects pupils entering Year 7 to continue into Year 8 and sit Common Entrance, Scholarship, or specific entrance exams set by their intended senior school. Prospective pupils attend a taster session. This comprises assessment in English and Maths, a tour of the School, a group task, and the opportunity to meet their peers. We also hold a Scholarship Day in the Lent Term to consider boys for Academic Scholarships as well as Music, Sport, Creative and Performing Arts opportunities.

Occasionally, places do become available in other year groups as and when boys leave the School. We would encourage all parents to register their son(s) as soon as possible to indicate interest in a particular year group outside of our usual intake years.

Please contact Mrs Alison Payne, Registrar, on 01494 685400 for further information on admissions.

Senior School Taster Session

Before offering a place to any boy wishing to join Davenies in Year 7, we invite them along to a Taster Session. Not only does this allow us to get to know each individual boy better, but it also enables them to experience life in Years 7 and 8 at Davenies first-hand, along with some of the things that the School has to offer.

Our Year 7 Taster Sessions are designed to provide the opportunity for boys currently in Year 6 to visit Davenies and experience the School in action. The session comprises an English and Maths assessment, a group task and a tour with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Boys will have the chance to visit our outstanding facilities, interact with our current pupils and experience first-hand what life in Years 7 and 8 is like at Davenies.

In addition to the Taster Day, and to further help us understand each boy’s academic profile, we will also ask his current school to provide a reference in advance of him joining us.

The next Year 7 Taster Session is taking place in November 2024 which is in place for boys wishing to join Davenies in September 2025. If you would like to register your interest, please contact our Registrar, Mrs Alison Payne.

FAQs

Davenies School

We warmly welcome all enquires and are here to guide you through every step of the admissions process. We offer private tours of the school during the week and hold termly Open Mornings. Some frequently asked questions are answered below, but please do get in touch if you’d like further information about any aspect of the admissions process, or would like to arrange your visit.

When should I register my son?2022-12-04T11:19:42+00:00
Places for Reception are offered out approximately 12 months prior to boys starting. Places are offered out on a first come basis, by registration date. We recommend you register prior to this date to be in the first batch of offers. There are 40 places in Reception.
Is there an assessment for entry?2022-12-04T11:19:40+00:00
  • Reception: entrants to Reception are not formally assessed, but the Head of Pre-Prep will visit the prospective pupils at their nursery to observe informal play and to be informed about their suitability for the Davenies environment. If, as a result of discussing a pupil with the nursery and seeing him in situ, there are any concerns then the Head of Pre-Prep will discuss these concerns with the parents.
For all entrants above Reception level reports from the previous school will be obtained.
  • Years 1 and 2: entrants to Pre-Prep after Reception will be invited to spend a morning with their prospective classmates where they will meet the Head of Pre-Prep and be asked to do some reading, writing and Maths.
  • Year 3 to Year 6: Applicants will be invited to spend a day with their prospective classmates. During the day they will be assessed in order to inform the School as to whether or not the prospective pupil can work within the parameters of a class at Davenies and, where appropriate, he would later be placed in sets. We also ask for a copy of his most recent school report and request a reference from the applicant’s current school.
  • Year 7 entry and Scholarship: at the end of Year 6 some pupils will leave to take up places at local Grammar schools and so there are usually vacancies for Year 7 entry. The assessment procedure is as above. The school expects entrants to Year 7 to continue into Year 8 and sit Common Entrance, Scholarship or separate Entrance exams set by senior schools.
When would my son start at Davenies?2022-12-04T11:19:39+00:00

Boys start in Reception in September, in the academic year that they turn 5.

What size are the classes?2022-12-04T11:19:38+00:00

Twenty is our usual class size, with two classes per year group in the Pre-Prep (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) and Junior School (Years 3 and 4). In the Middle School (Years 5 and 6), the boys are grouped into two classes, however they are academically set into three groups for Mathematics and English. In the Senior School, boys in Years 7 and 8 have around ten boys within a tutor group and are streamed for their academic subjects as they prepare for senior school exams.

When do boys leave Davenies?2022-12-04T11:19:37+00:00

The majority of pupils stay at Davenies to 13 and then move on to a wide range of independent senior schools. On average 75% stay on, with the remainder typically choosing the 11+ grammar school option; we have a small intake of new pupils at Y7. We believe that it is important, and indeed a strength of the school, to offer the boys and their parents a wide range of choices of destination at the age of 13, and therefore the boys sit entrance exams for a variety of independent senior schools, both boarding and day. The 13+ Independent Schools Examination Board Syllabus is incorporated into our Year 6, 7 and 8 curricula and this equips the boys for any of the entrance examinations set by the senior school of their choice.

Which schools do Davenies boys move on to?2022-12-04T11:19:36+00:00

Our Year 8 boys achieved 100% pass rate at Common Entrance, with all boys securing a place at their first choice of school. For list of destination schools please see our destinations page.

Is it possible to join Davenies in Years 1-7?2022-12-04T11:19:35+00:00

Entry into the school is usually at Reception or Year 7, although we may occasionally have vacancies in other year groups. Admission is at the discretion of the Headmaster and subject to availability of places, which is usually restricted to two classes per year group.

Can I visit the school?2022-12-04T11:19:34+00:00

We offer tours on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Contact our Registrar, Alison Payne to book a tour. We also run one Open Morning a term, where you can see the school in action. You can contact Alison Payne on 01494 685400.
