Cardiff History Trip 2024

Last weekend saw the arrival of the much anticipated trip to Cardiff, which certainly lived up to high expectations with a visit to some of the Welsh capital’s iconic and historical sites…

Twenty seven eager and enthusiastic explorers, accompanied by equally enthusiastic staff departed Davenies bright and early to begin the adventures. First on their action packed itinerary was the magnificent Cardiff Castle. Boys explored over 2000 years of history contained within its fairytale walls, enjoying a guided tour as well as a workshop charting the development of armour and castle attack and defence methods. Our group then ventured to the infamous Barry Island. Here, there was tunnelling aplenty as boys made the most of the beach landscape, including a game of beach cricket and NFL before taking part in a stone skimming competition to end our afternoon at the seaside. Boys and staff very much enjoyed the hospitality of our hotel and took full advantage of the delicious menu on our meal out at Frankie and Benny’s that evening.

On Saturday, our group ventured to the National Big Pit Coal Museum in the unique Blaenavon Industrial Landscape and designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Led by ex-miners, boys were fascinated by tales of life underground and the history of the Black Gold that was shipped all over the world. They experienced the sights, sounds and atmosphere of a real coal mine as they took part in the world famous underground tour and were lowered 90m underground. Life underground was followed by an afternoon at sea, exploring Cardiff Bay by boat whilst listening to an engaging audio commentary of the area. A dose of friendly competition was delivered by a game of ten-pin bowling after dinner at Pizza Express with strikes aplenty!

Our final destination on Sunday was a guided, private tour of The Principality Stadium where boys and staff experienced the 74,000 seater stadium where the Welsh Rugby Team play their home fixtures and where the 2017 Champions League Trophy final was played. Boys were shown the royal box, changing rooms and even walked out the tunnel! Mrs Battersby was also extremely excited!

Boys returned weary, but inspired by their travels, and their behaviour was excellent. Indeed many positive comments were received from members of the public who noticed boys’ manners and thoughtfulness, truly embodying our motto of each striving for the good of all. Our next venture of this kind will be October 2025, where we will visit yet another British city, watch this space…
