Footballers Roar at Lions Trials

Pupils in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 recently attended trials for a regional representative football team organised by the England Prep Schools’ Lions. Over 486 boys from 80 different schools were nominated to take part in what was a tough weekend of matches and training.

At the trials the selectors picked an ‘A’ Squad for the Under 11, Under 12 and Under 13 age groups. These are (according to the selectors!) the best players in each age group. Joshua Rail of Year 6 was selected for the Under 11 A squad this season. An outstanding achievement. The ‘A’ Squad play matches during the Lent Term against Academies and other regional representative teams.

In addition a ‘Development Squad’ was selected for the coming season. The ‘A’ Squad are combined with Development Squad players born in the same calendar year to form a team to attend an Easter Training Camp, and to represent the Prep Schools’ Lions and England at the Gothia World Youth Cup -the largest and most international youth football tournament – in July. Jackson Cooper, Henry Walsh, Luke Bell, Archie Inch, Oscar Mendes Da Costa and Jasper Lindgren Southgate were all selected for the Development Squad and will enjoy a fantastic trip to the Gothia World Youth Cup.

In addition to the new crop of players selected, James Hughes, Leonardo Da Cunha, Caspar Claridge, Angus Bell, Benjamin Cornelius and Ethan Grimes-Crompton will also be returning next year to the Gothia Cup 2023 with their squads from this Summer.

Congratulations to all those selected.
