Runners Impress at OPS Cross-Country

The fun was shining at Oratory Prep School for their annual cross-country event, in which Davenies ran home with an array of impressive finishes!

Ten schools with eight runners in each age group found the going was good-to-very soft. There were several fallers, waders and lost shoers, but all picked themselves back up and completed the course showing great determination. Team Davenies were on excellent form with a multitude of gritty performances, all coping well with the bottle-neck start, the steady, uphill climb and the root-infested woods. Some clever, tactical running was also in play with a number of boys using their experience to negotiate the hazards, sharp elbows, spikes and, whilst others were fading, finish strongly on the home straight. Particularly well done to the medallists: James Hughes (Winner of the Year 7/8 Race), Otto Clark-Shorten (Winner of the Year 3 Race), Ben Cooper (3rd in the Year 6 Race), George Lowden and Xander Arentz (2nd and 3rd respectively in the Year 4 Race). The Year 4 team were overall winners in their race, whilst the Year 5 Team finished 3rd overall. An excellent achievement.

All of Davenies’ runners were impressive – they prepared and ran very well, supported each other and generally enjoyed their day at the races. The final word goes to James Hughes who captained Team Davenies in exemplary fashion. He led the warm-up, marshalled teams to the start, supported all the races and even had time to run his own race and come in first from a starting field of 60 runners. Brilliant!
